How do I specify trapping for a frame in QuarkXPress 3.0?
The color applied to a frame is an "object" color relative to both the background color of its box and the color(s) that surround the box. Frames are unique in that you can specify trapping for a colored frame relative to both the inside background color (the background color of the box) and the outside background color(s).
Here are a few guidelines for trapping frames:
* Bitmap frames cannot be trapped; all bitmap frames are knocked out of their backgrounds. The last nine default frames in the Frame Style scroll list in the Frame Specifications dialog box (Item -> Frame) and all frames created with Frame Editor are bitmap frames. The first seven frames in the scroll list can be trapped.
* When trapping a frame color to the background color of its box, the only option is to spread the frame (i.e., specify a positive trap value for the frame "object" color relative to the box background color). You cannot choke a frame against the background color of its box. If you specify a negative trapping value for a frame color relative to the background color of its box (i.e., a choke), the frame will knock out the background when you print separations.
* Multiple-line frames (the second through seventh frames in the Frame Style scroll list) consist of solid lines separated by white spaces. On boxes for which an Item runaround is specified (via the Runaround Specifications dialog box [Item -> Runaround]) these frames are trapped the same as a solid frame except that the white areas are unaffected and knock out of all plates. If no runaround is specified, the background color prints in the areas between the lines.
* If a framed box is surrounded by items of different colors, the outside of the frame will trap according to the trapping relationship specified between the frame color and the Indeterminate color.
Examples:
If you want to place a 12-point black frame around a picture box with a background color, and you want a 1-point trap (spread), you should:
1. Specify an 11-point black frame for the box.
2. Apply a background color to the box.
3. Specify a +1pt trapping value for the object color "Black" relative to the background color applied to box.
When you print separations, the frame will be 12 points wide and will overlap the background color by 1 point .
If you want to place a 12-point black frame on a picture box and trap (spread) the frame relative to the picture within the box, you can use the following "trick:"
1. Specify an 11-point black frame for the box.
2. Apply any background color to the box and specify a .1% shade.
3. Specify a +1pt trapping value for the object color "Black" relative to the background color of the box.
When you print separations, the frame will be 12 points wide and will overlap the picture by 1 point.
